Rien Poortvliet, a renowned Dutch artist and illustrator, possesses a remarkable gift for connecting with animals. In this work, he combines his artistic talent with his keen observations of wildlife, presenting a vibrant portrayal of his favorite forest-dwelling creatures. Living in a rustic cottage, Poortvliet captures the essence of boars, ducks, deer, rabbits, partridges, pheasants, and foxes through enchanting drawings and paintings. His essays and captions reveal his deep affection for these animals, sharing insights into their customs, habitats, and mating behaviors. For instance, he challenges the stereotype of the sly fox by portraying Reynard as cautious and suspicious rather than cunning. He also shares surprising facts about mallards, noting the dangers faced by female ducks outnumbered by drakes. This work serves as a blend of natural history, keen observation, and imaginative storytelling, appealing to those who cherish the beauty and preservation of wildlife. Poortvliet is also known for his upcoming book on horses and has previously authored works like He Was One of Us and The Dutch Farm. His illustrations for the best-seller Gnomes further explore the enchanting world of forest animals. Robert Elman, an expert on the outdoors and Wildlife Editor of Outdoor Life magazine, contributes the Introduction. The book features 160 pages of illustrations, with 139 in color.
