Cora is a slave on a Georgia cotton plantation, facing immense suffering, especially as an outcast among her fellow Africans. As she comes of age, her pain deepens. When Caesar, a newcomer from Virginia, introduces her to the Underground Railroad, they decide to escape, risking everything. Their plan goes awry when Cora kills a white boy attempting to capture her. Though they find a station and head north, they are pursued.
