In a world of humanoid aliens, the Priestess-Ruler of the Hana, connected by a shared history of destruction, captures human Kurt Morgan, granting him life but binding him to his captors. Immersed in an alien environment that threatens his sanity, Kurt grapples with his situation while discovering a unique bond with his captor. Both have survived the annihilation of their worlds, and as they realize their new planet faces impending war, they become aware that they might be the only ones who understand the sacrifices that conflict entails. Their quest becomes one of survival, as they ponder whether they can save this world or perish alongside it as humanity's orphans in space. Meanwhile, Aiela, a world-survey officer, is abducted by the Iduve, an advanced spacefaring race devoid of human emotion. Mind-linked with two other captives, Aiela's existence is now dedicated to serving his captors aboard the Ashanome. When the ship arrives at Priamos, a war-torn planet embroiled in conflict between humans and the amaut, Aiela discovers that his fugitive brother is hiding there. Chimele, the Ashanome's leader, is prepared to sacrifice Priamos to eliminate him. The fate of the planet rests in the hands of Aiela and his fellow captives, who must navigate their dire circumstances to save Priamos from destruction.
