Kukaččí vejce je vstupní částí volné trilogie Věk průzkumů. Podobně jako v jiných svých prózách buduje autorka románový příběh na konfrontaci odlišných civilizací a kultur, jež vznikaly a vyvíjely se odděleny propastmi vesmírných dálek a jejichž kontakt s sebou přináší dramatické konflikty. Co udělat pro to, aby se dvě odlišná společenství – pozemšťané a mimozemšťané – dokázala v případě setkání dohodnout na nějaké formě nenásilného soužití? To je problém, který řeší protagonisté tohoto románu, klon pozemského kosmonauta Thorn a jeho pěstoun mimozemšťan Duun, který chlapce vypiplal ze zárodku, ujal se jeho výchovy a cílevědomě jej učil vyrovnávat se s vlastní odlišností vyvolávající u mimozemšťanů strach a z něj plynoucí agresivitu. Bude „kosmický Mauglí“ Thorn díky „kosmickému panterovi“ Duunovi mimozemšťany přijat? A jestliže ano, dokáže zprostředkovat případný další kontakt s pozemšťany jako bezkonfliktní, a tedy životazáchovný?
