A photographic and narrative celebration of contemporary Native American life and cultures, this work by celebrated photographer Matika Wilbur of the Swinomish and Tulalip Tribes examines critical issues faced by Native people. In 2012, Wilbur embarked on a Kickstarter-funded journey to visit and photograph individuals from the 562 federally recognized Native American Tribal Nations. Over a decade, she traveled six hundred thousand miles across fifty states, from Seminole country to Inuit territory, engaging with and documenting the lives of hundreds of Indigenous people. This extensive body of work counters one-dimensional stereotypes in mainstream media, showcasing the richness and diversity of Indian Country. The culmination of her efforts, this project serves as a sweeping love letter to Indigenous Americans, featuring hundreds of stunning portraits and personal narratives that reflect contemporary Native experiences. These narratives address themes of identity, media representation, sovereignty, family, sacred site protection, subsistence living, traditional knowledge, land stewardship, language preservation, advocacy, education, and the arts. An essential contribution from a remarkable artist, this work inspires and educates, transforming perceptions of Native America.
