Langston Hughes's stories about Jesse B. Semple, originally written for a weekly column in the Chicago Defender and later compiled in several volumes, have captivated countless readers. He graduated from Lincoln University in 1929 and received an honorary Litt. D. in 1943. While best known for his poetry and the creation of Simple, Hughes also authored novels, biographies, histories, plays—including Broadway hits—and children's books, in addition to editing anthologies. He passed away in 1967, leaving behind a rich legacy.
