Die Arbeit untersucht die „Kongo-Greuel“ in der Privatkolonie des belgischen Königs Léopold II. um 1900, die zu einem bedeutenden kolonialpolitischen Skandal wurden. Ausgehend von einem diskurstheoretischen Ansatz, der auf postkolonialer 'Colonial Discourse Analysis' basiert, analysiert die Studie journalistische Texte, Dokumentarliteratur und Belletristik, die sich mit den Kongo-Greueln in Europa und den USA auseinandersetzen. Der literaturwissenschaftliche Fokus auf fiktionale Texte und Bildmaterial beleuchtet die Ambivalenz eines kolonialkritischen Diskurses, der oft an rassistischen und kolonialen Perspektiven auf Afrika festhält. Es werden literarische Proteststrategien, Kollektivsymbolik und das Potenzial ästhetischer Horrorerfahrungen untersucht. Neben dem bekannten Text 'Heart of Darkness' von Conrad werden auch vergessene Beiträge aus dem kolonialen Archiv, etwa von Mark Twain und Octave Mirbeau, hervorgehoben.
