A treasure trove of portraits from more than 20 African and African-descendant contemporary painters This catalog showcases over 20 figurative artists from the African continent and diaspora. While the artists assembled represent a diverse array of styles, they all explore complex questions of identity, aesthetics and art history. Amoako Boafo and Otis Quaicoe reveal richly layered hybrid identities; Souleimane Barry, Bouvy Enkobo and Christopher Myers conjure dreamlike scenes that merge the real and the imaginary, drawing from an endless trove of African myths. Together, the artists' portraits invite the reader to interrogate how the Black figure has often been misrepresented or overlooked in the Western painting tradition. Artists include: Millicent Akweley, Cornelius Annor, Crystal Yara Anthony, Atsoupé, Souleimane Barry, Amoako Boafo, David Aplerh-Doku Borlabi, Alexandre Diop, Kimathi Donokor, Matthew Eguavoen, Bouvy Enkobo, Basil Kincaid, Turiya Magadela, Gastineau Massamba, James Mishio, Christopher Myers, Everlyn Nicodemus, Jean-David Nkot, Boluwatife Oyederin, Afia Prempeh, Otis Kwame Kye Quaicoe, Josie Love Roebuck, Eric Adjei Tawiah and Tesfaye Urgessa.

Hütte ranks among the leading protagonists of contemporary landscape photography; since the late 1970s, he has made a substantial contribution to the self-assured standing of photography in visual art. Like his fellow artists from the Düsseldorf School of Photography (Becher School) such as Candida Höfer, Andreas Gursky, or Thomas Struth, Hütte stands for the tableau character of the photographic image as an equivalent counterpart of painting. Axel Hütte's artistic work started out in the late 1970s with stark objectification of the reality of portraits as well as urban interiors and exteriors. In the early 1990s, the artist turned to considerably larger picture sizes, with landscape becoming his dominant theme. Unlike his earlier documentary pictures, the more recent large-format works have more of an imaginative and hallucinatory dimension.

The Hubert Looser Collection is one of the most remarkable private collections of modern and contemporary art in Europe, focusing on Surrealism, Abstract Expressionism, Minimal Art, and Arte Povera. The exhibition at Kunsthalle Krems presents an engaging overview of graphic and sculptural expressions, showcasing over 150 works by more than 40 artists. Following this, it will be displayed at Kunsthaus Zürich. A significant portion of the collection consists of works on paper, referred to as the "chamber music" section, which complements the "orchestral" paintings and sculptures. Featured artists include Arshile Gorky, Willem de Kooning, Cy Twombly, Andy Warhol, Agnes Martin, Roni Horn, and Richard Serra. The collection emphasizes line and drawing as a visual manifesto, reflecting the collector's intuitive engagement with art. Gorky's pieces illustrate the transition from Surrealism to Abstract Expressionism, while works by David Smith, Philip Guston, and Brice Marden showcase gestural processes. Sean Scully's monumental pastel and Agnes Martin's minimalist watercolors highlight painterly approaches. Serra views drawing as a sculptural medium, using paper to convey the weight of oil paint. Exhibition dates: Kunsthalle Krems, Germany (01.07.
