Mumintroll sa ako prvý z rodiny zobudil zo zimného spánku. Okolie domčeka, ktoré tak dôverne poznal, našiel na nepoznanie zmenené. Všetko bolo prikryté snehovou perinou. Najprv sa na rozsiahlych snehových pláňach cítil trošku stratený, ale veľmi rýchlo zistil, že údolie je obývané aj v zime. Ibaže inými bytosťami ako v lete. Mumintroll si našiel nových kamarátov a zažil veľa vecí, ktoré doteraz nepoznal - fujavicu, praskanie ľadových krýh a jarné topenie snehu.

Deväť pôvabných príbehov zo života mumintrollov, hemulov, hattifnatov, filifjoniek a iných zvláštnych bytostí, ktoré sa síce podobajú na zvieratká, no majú ľudské vlastnosti. Pobehujú v roztápajúcom sa snehu, hľadajú si svoje veci, občas sa zastavia na kus reči, ale potom sa opäť ponáhľajú, aby stihli jarné upratovanie. Prvé ráno po dlhom zimnom spánku je to najkrajšie. Kým Muminova mamička pripraví raňajky, vyberú sa Mumintroll, Sniff a Mumrik na výlet na kopec nad údolím. Na samom vŕšku nájdu čierny klobúk. Netušia však, že klobúk je čarodejný a premení údolie na miesto najrôznejších kúzel a čarodejníckych kúskov.

Je november. Prší. Leto je preč. Niektorí tvorčekovia zatúžia po teple domova a vyberú sa do Mumintrollovho domčeka. Dom je však prázdny. Hemul, bojazlivá Filifionka, osamelý homko, prastarý Sváčko a pekná Mimla a neskôr aj Snusmumrik sa rozhodnú v dome na Muminovcov počkať. Ako to dopadne, keď sa zídu na jednom mieste také rôzne povahy? Návštevníci sa nevedia Muminovskej rodinky dočkať, a tak sa vyberú späť do svojich domovov a vytúženej samoty. Ale v dome predsa niekto zostane a čaká...

Otecko sa v Muminovskom údolí už veľmi nudí, a tak zatúži po nových zážitkoch. Chce sa na vzdialenom ostrove stať strážcom majáka. Ostrov so zhasnutým majákom je nevľúdne, pusté a drsné miesto bez stromov, úplný protiklad čarovného Muminovského údolia. Otecko ostrov vzrušene skúma, Muminkovi však naháňa strach a mamička túži po svojej rozkvitnutej záhradke. Pobyt na ostrove všetkých zmení.

Knižka Otecko píše pamäti je vlastne prvým veľkým príbehom pôvabnej rodiny Muminovcov a ich neobyčajných priateľov. Nad muminovským údolím čnie zdanlivo nečinná sopka. Lenže v jedno leto ožije a začne chrliť sadze. Na zemi sa objavia pukliny a údolie zaleje voda. A hoci Muminovcov pripraví o útulný domček, nesťažujú sa a odvážne vplávajú do náruče novému dobrodružstvu. Šťastná náhoda im priplaví do cesty tajuplný dom. Skrýva množstvo vecí, ktoré nie sú tým, čím sa zdajú byť - papierové dvere, schody, ktoré nikam nevedú, sadrové jablká... Až urazená potkanica Ema im prezradí, že sa ocitli v slávnom divadle.

Tove Jansson si svojimi knižkami o malých, trochu tajomných bytôstkach – muminoch – získala verných čitateľov v mnohých krajinách sveta.
