This book compiles findings from an integrated inter- and transdisciplinary study of land use systems and biodiversity in Brazil's Atlantic Forest region (Mata Atlântica). Conducted from 2002 to 2008 by a team of 27 scientists from Europe and Latin America, the research examines the dynamics of the Atlantic Forest, providing original results and thematic conclusions alongside a comprehensive literature review. The content is aimed at researchers, students, lecturers, applied scientists, and policymakers in biodiversity conservation, sustainable land use, agriculture, agroforestry, soil science, and botany. The first two chapters focus on the dynamics of the Atlantic Forest, current land use systems, and fragmentation processes, particularly in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro. Chapters 3 to 5 delve into the need for interdisciplinary research on human ecological systems and the role of the National Park Serra dos Ógaos in biodiversity conservation. Subsequent chapters (6 to 11) assess the environmental impacts of various agricultural practices, including forestry and cattle-raising, on the soil-water complex and their sustainability. Kulturlandschaften sind durch menschliches Wirken beeinflusste Landschaften und das Ergebnis einer fortwährenden Auseinandersetzung des Menschen mit der Natur. Sie sind Zeugen historischer Prozesse und Archive für eine nachhaltige Zukunft und vereinen zudem kulturelle und ökonomische Werte mit ökologischer Bedeutung. Angesichts des Klimawandels nehmen sie, in ihrem Bestand gefährdet, eine Vorreiterrolle für integrierte Bewältigungsstrategien ein. Der vorliegende Symposiumsband unternimmt eine systemische und interdisziplinäre Betrachtung deutscher und internationaler Kulturlandschaften, die als UNESCO-Weltkulturerbestätte oder Biosphärenreservat besonders im Fokus stehen.
