De icoon, die volgens de overlevering de helende krachten van Jezus Christus zou bezitten, wordt niet meer teruggevonden. Maar ruim vijftig jaar later duikt het kunstwerk weer op... In New York krijgt conservator Matthew Spear de opdracht de jonge erfgename Ana Kessler te helpen bij de verkoop van een mysterieuze Byzantijnse icoon. Ana heeft de Heilige Moeder van Katarini geërfd van haar grootvader. Maar niet alleen het Metropolitan Museum of Art - waarbij Matthew in dienst is - wil in het bezit komen van het unieke kunstwerk. Ook de Grieks orthodoze kerk claimt het verdwenen kunstwerk en de Russische maffie ontwikkelt eveneens plannen om de icoon te bemachtigen.
