Gegen Ende der 1960er Jahre herrschte in vielen europäischen Ländern Aufbruchstimmung, in der Gesellschaft und den Künsten. Die Arte Povera war die bedeutendste „rebellische“ Kunst-Strömung aus Italien. Der Wunsch der jungen Künstler, die Distanz zum Betrachter zu verringern, die Wahrnehmung zu erweitern und eine soziale und ästhetische Verwandlung des Alltags anzustreben, wurde durch den internationalen Erfolg der Arte Povera bestätigt. Die stilistische Freiheit, die der neue Gattungsname erlaubte, führte zu einem breit gefächerten Spektrum von Arbeiten, die sich als ausserordentlich einflussreich für die Entwicklung der zeitgenössischen Kunst seither erwiesen. Vorgestellt werden Werke der Hauptvertreter der Arte Povera: Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero Boetti, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Luciano Fabro, Jannis Kounellis, Mario Merz, Marisa Merz, Giulio Paolini, Pino Pascali, Giuseppe Penone, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Emilio Prini und Gilberto Zorio.

This publication traces the early days of Arte Povera from 1967 to 1971, capturing its atmospheric intensity and historical significance. It explores the diverse and individualistic artistic approaches within what may appear as a homogeneous movement. Arte Povera is depicted as a transformative force, embodying hopes for social and aesthetic change through art. The analysis is structured around four main themes: the first focuses on 'time – primeval times – the history of the earth'; the second on 'primary processes – alchemy – energy'; the third on 'picture in picture – exit from the picture'; and the fourth on 'body and action.' This desire to broaden the scope of art and life led to a process-oriented approach that resisted art market appropriation. Additionally, the publication chronicles contemporary history through an extensive collection of ephemera, highlighting the sociopolitical factors that underscore the radical nature of this movement.
