Paul Chan

    • The acerbically funny and intimate screenplay for acclaimed visual artist Martine Syms's debut film, The African Desperate. The African Desperate follows Palace Bryant on one very long day in 2017 that starts with her MFA graduation in upstate New York and ends at a Chicago Blue Line Station. Set against the lush backdrop of late summer, Palace navigates the pitfalls of self-actualization and the fallacies of the art world. Shot through with Syms's celebrated conceptual grit, humor, social commentary, and vivid visual language, The African Desperate leads us through picturesque landscapes and artists studios, from academic critiques to backseat hookups, and from the night of a wild graduation party to the morning of a lonely trip back home.

    • This final installment of Creative Time's multi-part project by Paul Chan presents a rich collection of primary ephemera, photographs, articles, and essays that document a community-centric process from conception to completion. Organized into eight sections—Remember, Picture, Relate, Organize, Appear, Play, Film, Reflect—the book focuses on the production of Samuel Beckett's classic play, staged over two weekends in New Orleans neighborhoods: the Lower Ninth Ward and Gentilly. This re-imagining of the post-Katrina landscape serves as a backdrop for a narrative about waiting, highlighting the personal and political conditions faced by the residents of New Orleans and evacuees from surrounding areas. In November 2007, Chan presented five performances of Beckett's work in the hurricane-ravaged city, with an audience primarily composed of locals, for whom the play's themes resonated with existential urgency. The Field Guide offers a comprehensive look at Chan's impactful and innovative production, featuring contributions from notable figures such as Alain Badiou, Terry Eagleton, and Susan Sontag, among others. It captures the essence of a transformative artistic endeavor that intertwines community engagement with profound literary exploration.

Exuberantly colorful and sometimes irreverent digital works by American artist Petra Cortright Known for her video works available on YouTube and in galleries, and for her leading role in the creation of "Net art," Los Angeles-based artist Petra Cortright (born 1986) experiments with the imagery of physical bodies in digital spaces, exploiting the main formal properties of video software. Her videos have at times proved controversial (such as her works with strippers in VirtuaGirl), at times heralded and lauded. Cortright is also known for her paintings created with digital software, mixing concrete and abstract elements and printed on a wide variety of material. Such works are the product of an experimentation with Photoshop layers on a so-called "mother file," enriched with the use of digital tools and then manipulated through industrial printing techniques. This first monograph on her work includes writings on Cortright by fellow artists Martine Syms and Paul Chan, and by MoMA curatorial assistant Giampaolo Bianconi.

The catalogue to the exhibition „Paul Chan - Selected Works“, held at the Schaulager Basel in 2014, was developed by the artist in collaboration with graphic designers and intended as a „picture book within a book.“ At its heart is the overwhelming wealth of images in the „Selected Source Files“ series. The collages of heterogeneous material testify to the wideranging sources of inspiration and the visual context on which the artist has drawn in his work. A cleverly conceived essay by Daniel Birnbaum is an aid to deeper understanding. Photographs of the installations on view in the exhibition, a list of works, and commentary linking the individual groups of works round off the publication.
