This study aims to demonstrate that incantations from the Western Grassland region of Cameroon are deeply rooted in the people's religious beliefs and practices, reflecting their perception of the universe as an ordered system. This system encompasses various structures, ranging from inorganic matter to human beings, as well as the inanimate, animate, celestial, and spiritual realms, all of which are categorized into physical and metaphysical domains. Metaphysically, these structures form a hierarchy of perfections or degrees of being. Inorganic matter represents the most basic level of reality, while life exists at various degrees above it. Each level of life manifests as a synthesis that reduces diversity to unity. Vegetative life, for instance, transforms inorganic matter into a unified organism. The next tier, sensory or animal life, builds upon vegetative life, while the highest tier—spiritual or intellectual life—depends on a highly developed form of sensory life. In this context, human existence exemplifies the ultimate reduction of diversity to unity, as the sense-knowledge and affections of animal life are transcendentally unified within the spiritual self, establishing a connection to the spirit world.
