Seine Bilder zeigen ein System gesellschaftlicher Ordnung, das ihm fremd erscheint. Das Ordnungssystem geht soweit, dass selbst Obdachlose ihre Liegematten im Park streng geordnet ausrichten und Kinder beim Spielen im Freizeitpark Nummern für ihre Identifikation tragen. Born gelingt es, diese Ordnung in Bildern einzufangen, die trotz allem Freiräume zeigen – so wird der Weg in der nächtlichen U-Bahn, durch die tagsüber die Massen strömen, zum einsamen Spaziergang oder die Radfahrt im Park des Kaiserpalasts zu einer gemächlichen Landpartie. Collective order is the term Swiss photographer Marius Born uses to describe urban life in Tokyo, which forms the subject of this volume. Born’s images depict a system of social order which appears alien to him. The dominance of order is so extreme that even the homeless neatly lay out their sleeping mats in a park and children in an amusement park are identified by the numbers that they wear. Born succeeds in capturing this order in his images, revealing the empty spaces even in crowded public spaces. Thus the path to the subway, along which the masses stream during the day, becomes the site of a solitary stroll. Similarly a bicycle ride to the grounds of the Imperial Palace turns into a leisurely outing.
