James Clark Ross ist bereits erfahrener Seefahrer und Polarforscher, als er 1839 nach sieben Arktisexpeditionen in die südliche Polarregion aufbricht. Zuvor hat er einen witterungsbedingten vierjährigen Zwangsaufenthalt im nördlichen Eis dazu genutzt, um den Magnetpol der Nordhalbkugel zu entdecken. 1841 kann er bereits auf seinem ersten Vorstoß nach Süden den Magnetpol der Südhalbkugel bestimmen. Zudem entdeckt er Süd-Victorialand und auf einer vorgelagerten Insel, die später Ross-Insel genannt wird, zwei Vulkane, die er nach seinen Schiffen Mount Terror und Mount Erebus tauft. Im folgenden Jahr untersucht er im Ross-Meer die große Eisbarriere des Ross-Schelfeises und stellt einen Rekord auf: Bei 78°10´ S erreicht er in der Wal-Bucht die südlichste von Menschen erkundete Region. Vor der Rückreise führt 1843 ein dritter Vorstoß in das Weddell-Meer.
