Jacobus Pontanus (Jakob Spanmüller aus Most/Brüx ca. 1542-1626), der bedeutendste Latinist der Gesellschaft Jesu um 1600, wirkte von 1572 bis 1582 an der Universität Dillingen, vornehmlich als Professor der Humanitas (Poesie) und Rhetorik. Aus dieser Zeit sind in der Handschrift Studienbibliothek Dillingen XV 399 Reden zu philosophischen Promotionsakten und im Codex Vindobonensis 9838 der Österreichischen Natonalbiliothek Reden zur Eröffnung des Studienjahres erhalten, die hier erstmals ediert werden. Pontanus hat sie später teilweise in seine gedruckten Werke (vor allem die Progymnasmata Latinitatis) übernommen. Sie zeigen nicht nur die hohe sprachliche und rhetorische Kunst des Verfassers, sondern auch sein späthumanistisches Bildungsideal und sind ein bedeutendes Zeugnis der Universitätskultur im späten 16. Jahrhundert.
