Der Autor Charles Frederick Hartt (1840-1878) war ein kanadisch-amerikanischer Naturwissenschaftler. Seine geologischen Forschungen führten ihn 1865 erstmals nach Brasilien, wo er sich in Land und Leute verliebte. Schon bald galt sein ganz besonderes Interesse den zahlreichen Schildkrötenmärchen, die er voller Hingabe sammelte und 1875 veröffentlichte. Die Streiche der listigen Schildkröte Jabutí lassen uns bis heute schmunzeln und die anschaulichen Erläuterungen des Autors zu den Bräuchen der Einheimischen geben Einblick in eine Welt, die fast 150 Jahre später im Versinken begriffen ist.
