Der Kubismus, der u. a. von Picasso und Braque begründet wurde, gilt manchen als erste Avantgarde-Bewegung der Kunst im 20. Jahrhundert. Von afrikanischer und indianischer Kunst inspiriert, dekonstruierten seine Anhänger die europäischen Konventionen von Form und Perspektive und schufen zweidimensionale, fragmentierte und revolutionäre Bilder. Danach bildete der Kubismus zwei unterschiedliche Richtungen aus: den Analytischen Kubismus, der weiterhin perspektivische Ebenen in den Farben Schwarz, Grau und Ocker miteinander verwob, und den späteren Synthetischen Kubismus, der von einfacheren Formen, strahlenderen Farben und Collage-Elementen wie Zeitungsfetzen geprägt war. Dieses Buch stellt Werke der Hauptvertreter des Kubismus vor, darunter Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque, Fernand Léger, Juan Gris, Albert Gleizes und Robert Delaunay.
