Der Futurismus ist eine 1909 in Italien entstandene radikale Bewegung der Avantgarde, die eine neue, den Anforderungen des modernen Lebens entsprechende Kunst zu schaffen suchte. Fünf Maler gehörten zu diesem Kreis: Boccioni, Carrà, Russolo, Balla und Severini. Durch die Zerlegung des Farbauftrages in kleine, nebeneinander gesetzte Tupfen, die sich erst im Auge des Betrachters mischen, entsteht der Eindruck von Simultanität und Bewegung, welche mit Elementen des Dynamischen wie Lichtbündelung, vibrierende Konturen und phasenhaft wiederholte Formvariationen ergänzt wurde.
