Fontane tells the story of the generous Herr von Ribbeck from Ribbeck in Havelland, who shares the pears from the tree in his garden with passing children, speaking to them in the local dialect. In contrast, his son is miserly. As old Ribbeck senses his impending death, he requests that a pear be placed in his grave. From this pear, a new pear tree sprouts, allowing the children to continue enjoying its fruits freely, even though his heir keeps the garden and the tree strictly locked away. The tale explores themes of generosity versus greed, the impact of legacy, and the enduring spirit of kindness that transcends even death.
