Focusing on contemporary Catholic monasticism, this book presents a sociological analysis rooted in extensive fieldwork across three continents. It explores how monastic economies interact with the global economy, emphasizing a model that prioritizes the fulfillment of religious values over traditional economic performance. This unique perspective sheds light on the intersection of faith and economic practices within monastic communities.
Recent decades, in the context of a global and highly developed economy, seem to come back to the monastic ethos of economy. The Rule of S. Benedict and the history of monasticism have proved to be an excellent inspiration for people in business. Many monasteries actively and creatively participate, not only in local economic projects – as important tourist and cultural centres – but also as important employers. Monastic gastronomy and, usually organic, food products have become a base for a special culture for a modern, sobre and frugal style of being and welfare. The sharing economy and collaborative consumption seem to be an amazing application of monastic style in the practices of modern Western society. In this sense monasticism is really contributing to an understanding of economy as an ecologically friendly form of human brotherhood.
Eine Soziologie des Mönchtums in Österreich im europäischen Dialog
Eine paradoxe Situation: Einerseits ziehen Klöster ein immer breiteres Publikum an, andererseits nimmt die Zahl der Eintrittswilligen immer mehr ab, so dass Gemeinschaften auszusterben drohen. Der Band befasst sich - mit Blick auf Europa - vor allem mit der Situation in Österreich. Als empirisch angelegte soziologische Studie untersucht er die sozialen Dimensionen des Klosterlebens. Dabei werden neben der demographischen Lage die Arbeitsfelder der Mönche und Nonnen in den Blick genommen, insofern diese für die Identität und den gesellschaftlichen Platz eines Klosters eine entscheidende Rolle spielen. Um die aktuellen Umbrüche zu erklären, wird das Klosterleben in seinen alltäglichen Aspekten betrachtet, so z.B. der Einzug der neuen Technologien. Abschließend geht der Blick in die Zukunft, auch indem die Vorstellungen junger KatholikInnen vom Klosterleben einbezogen werden, um daraus Schlüsse zur Krise des Nachwuchses zu ziehen.
