Autor dielo zaľudnil mnohými postavami, ktorých osudy sa spájajú s baňou Neptún, jej ťažné veže sa týčia a dominujú nad baníckym mestečkom a jeho obyvateľmi. Z Neptúna, ako z nejakého apokalyptického materského lona, rozbiehajú sa osudy hrdinov, aby sa k nemu v akomsi magickom kruhu opäť vrátili. Každého spája s Neptúnom iné puto, no či ho nenávidia alebo milujú, živoria z neho či bohatnú, všetci sú od neho závislí.

Román škótskeho autora - dojímavý príbeh Lucy, ktorá poznala v živote tri lásky a všetky tri boli tragické a nenaplnené. Prvou láskou bol jej muž, ktorého tak milovala, že sa napokon stal obeťou tragického nedorozumenia a jej majetníckych pudov.
