Archibald Joseph CRONIN, známy anglický románopisec, narodený roku 1896 v Škótsku, nie je pôvodným povolaním spisovateľ, ale lekár. Spočiatku pracoval v niekoľkých nemocniciach, potom si otvoril v Južnom Walese súkromnú prax a r. 1924 sa stal zdravotným inšpektorom anglických baní. Sám fáraldo vyše päťsto baní, aby preskúmal tamojšie zdravotné pomery a ochranné zariadenia. Svoje smutné skúsenosti z tohto obdobia spomína v románe Citadela, v diele, ktoré neskôr založilo autorovi svetovú slávu. Autor dielo zaľudnil mnohými postavami, ktorých osudy sa spájajú s baňou Neptún, jej ťažné veže sa týčia a dominujú nad baníckym mestečkom a jeho obyvateľmi. Z Neptúna, ako z nejakého apokalyptického materského lona, rozbiehajú sa osudy hrdinov, aby sa k nemu v akomsi magickom kruhu opäť vrátili. Každého spája s Neptúnom iné puto, no či ho nenávidia alebo milujú, živoria z neho či bohatnú, všetci sú od neho závislí.

Román škótskeho autora - dojímavý príbeh Lucy, ktorá poznala v živote tri lásky a všetky tri boli tragické a nenaplnené.
