János Arany je často označovaný ako "Shakespeare balád" pre svoje majstrovské epické básne, ktoré sa ponárajú do legendárnej a historickej minulosti Maďarska. Jeho diela, známe svojou štylistickou eleganciou a hlbokým vhľadom, zahŕňajú pozoruhodné balady a cyklus "Toldi", ktorý zachytáva národný étos. Arany tiež vynikal v preklade, pričom jeho maďarské verzie Shakespearových diel sú považované za vrcholné umelecké dielo. Jeho báseň "Bardovia z Walesu" slúži ako mocné alegorické dielo, ktoré kritizuje útlak a stratu kultúry, zatiaľ čo jeho báseň "Dante" sa zamýšľa nad transcendentným významom ľudskej existencie. Výbor z díla jednoho z největších maďarských básníků (1817-1882), který byl pro svou svéráznost a neobyčejnou rozmanitost svého básnického jazyka dosud málo překládán, přináší průřez jeho tvorbou lyrickou a epickou i slavné balady, jejichž náměty Arany první čerpal z domácích pramenů - ze slavných stránek maďarských dějin i z příběhů všedního života. Z maď. orig. výbor uspořádal a poznámky napsal Ladislav Hradský. Předmluvu napsal Richard Pražák.
