Popri manželke Pauline Marie Pfeifferovej ho sprevádzali Charles Thompson, priateľ z floridského Key Westu (v knihe Karl Kabor), a profesionálny lovec a sprievodca Philip Percival (v knihe Jackson Phillips). V rozprávaní sa objaví aj náhodný hosť, Rakúšan Kandisky, ktorý autorovi poskytne príležitosť nadviazať rozhovor o živote a literatúre. Do sprievodu, pochopiteľne, patril aj neodmysliteľný rad domorodcov. Cesta zaviedla autora z pláne Serengeti v Tanganike na úpätí Kilimandžára do Kene. Ak by sa niekto nazdával, že ide o viac-menej vzrušujúcu loveckú historku s levmi a tigrami, asi by sa rýchlo dočkal sklamania. Autor dospieval a vyzrieval – prekonal búrlivácke očarenia mladosti, vyrovnal sa s vojnovými zážitkami a teraz, uprostred krízy osobnej i hospodárskej, hľadal novú orientáciu pre vlastného ducha i literárnu tvorbu. Ako píše v úvodnom slove: Autor sa pokúsil napísať absolútne pravdivú knihu, aby zistil, či podoba krajiny ľudského konania v priebehu jedného mesiaca, ak sa podá pravdivo, môže súťažiť s dielom fantázie.
