    Herman Melville bol americký prozaik, poviedkar, esejista a básnik. Jeho prvé dva romány získali značnú pozornosť, hoci neboli bestsellermi, a jeho popularita len o niekoľko rokov neskôr prudko klesla. Do svojej smrti bol takmer úplne zabudnutý, ale jeho najdlhší román, dnes považovaný za jedno z hlavných literárnych majstrovských diel americkej aj svetovej literatúry, bol v 20. storočí znovuobjavený.
