Dan sa narodil a vyrastal na severovýchode New Jersey. Po štúdiu krajinnej architektúry na Colorado State University sa stal bubeníkom rockabilly/punkovej kapely, s ktorou hral a žil rok v Londýne. Po skončení kapely sa vydal do Izraela študovať Bibliu a skúmať platnosť kresťanstva. Po návrate do Santa Cruz sa intenzívne zapojil do cirkevných aktivít a nakoniec vyštudoval biblické štúdium na Multnomah Seminary.
