People have always lived in families, but the meaning of family has varied significantly across time and cultures. It is not a "natural" phenomenon but an institution with a dynamic history spanning 10,000 years. The authors narrate the evolution of this fundamental unit from the onset of domestication and human settlement. They examine the codification of marriage rules in ancient societies, the changing conceptions of family influenced by colonialism and globalization, and how state policies shape families today. The narrative highlights the impact of gender and generational differences on family relations throughout history. Cooperation among family members—by birth or marriage—has fueled power expansions and cultural fusions in diverse contexts, from ancient Mesopotamia, where royal daughters served as priestesses bridging cultures, to sixteenth-century Mexico, where alliances between Spanish men and indigenous women shaped colonial dynamics. Conversely, family discord has also influenced historical events, such as China's 1919 May Fourth Movement, where youth sought to dismantle patriarchal authority. This perspective on family as a historical force illuminates human development and social patterns, offering fresh insights into the past and present.
