Rod je autorom pätnásť odborných kníh (plus troch pre NASA) na svoju obľúbenú tému, prieskum vesmíru a technológie. Túto fascináciu datuje do detstva, kedy ho jeho introvertnosť viedla k tráveniu nespočetných hodín sledovaním štartov rakiet, mesačných pochôdzok a sci-fi. Kým jeho rovesníci obdivovali futbalistov, on si nič neprial viac, než sa stať astronautom. Teraz si uvedomuje, že sa asi zle hodí pre vesmírny let. Sám priznáva, že hoci vystriedal sedem vysokých škôl, získal bakalársky titul z filmu a magisterský titul zo Stanfordu. Žije v Pasadene v Kalifornii, ale sníva o azúrových moriach a tropických pobrežiach.
