Benoîte Groult se ve svém netradičním životopise svěřuje s obtížemi, problémy a neúspěchy svého dětství, dospívání, profesionálního i soukromého života, přičemž se snaží najít a pochopit motivy svých názorů a činů. Čtenář tak dostává do ruky nezvykle upřímnou, břitce ironickou a nesmírně vtipnou zpověď "ženy svého věku", jež dokázala - byť ne vždycky tak rychle a úspěšně, jak by si představovala - překonat spoustu ustálených zvyků, nedostatek sebedůvěry i vlastní pasivitu a najít cestu, na jejímž konci teď stojí svobodná, moudrá a vyrovnaná žena s pocitem, že přes všechny mladistvé omyly, neopětované lásky, manželské nevěry, neúspěchy v práci a nekonečný shon v obtížné roli matky, milenky, hospodyně a intelektuálky byla vlastně šťastná.

C'est un conte bref, très habilement composé pour donner un effet de reproduction d'une ancestrale tradition, venue de la littérature orale. Récit peu surprenant, car très respectueux des schémas simples - le désir de richesse ; la crédulité des hommes face au leurre de l'argent ; la difficile conquête de l'objet censé apporter la richesse (ici, des saphirs) - et structuré par toutes les étapes obligées de la dépossession - accidents, naufrages, attaques de corsaires, morts, errances, pauvreté plus grande qu'avant l'acquisition de la supposée fortune, dénuement définitif. A quoi s'ajoutent des rituels plus particuliers à Yourcenar, comme l'automutilation. Plus encore que l'anecdote, c'est l'atmosphère de ce conte qui préfigure les Nouvelles orientales. J. S.
