For Kurt Jackson (b.1961), 'Painting the sea could become an obsession, an entire oeuvre in its own right, an endless life absorbing task.' And, as this book attests, Jackson's dedication to capturing its constant shape shifting--stillness to thundering force, shallows to mysterious depths--have brought forth paintings that communicate the sea's ebb and flow, its magic and elusiveness. Kurt Jackson's Sea captures the beauty of the artist's constantly evolving relationship with one of nature's most challenging subjects. Two hundred colour images complement Jackson's reflections on his interactions with inspirational coastal landscapes, largely experienced in his native Cornwall, but stretching way beyond the county too.

The paintings executed by Kurt Jackson (b.1961) do not reveal his day-to-day working practice. Behind his finished canvases are hundreds of sketchbooks borne out of his continual routine of making drawings, marks, notes, poems and scribbles. This book, newly available in paperback, examines the importance of the sketchbook to Jackson.

Natural history and art have been life-long preoccupations of the leading British painter Kurt Jackson (b.1961). For this book, Jackson has returned to zoology, the subject he studied at university, to create a beautiful bestiary: a body of work about fauna. Bestiaries date back to medieval times when religious instruction promoted the study and interpretation of animal life, often with the aid of elaborate illustrations. Later, the religious framework fell away, as artists and authors including Picasso, Toulouse Lautrec, Guillaume Apollinaire and Jorge Luis Borges used the form as a means of exploring nature, humanity and the relationship between the two. Jackson's contemporary bestiary extends this tradition, looking closely at both everyday and lesser-known species of birds, insects, mammals and fish in order to stimulate readers' connections with and appreciation of the world around them.

Toronto is not only Canada's economic capital, but it also has one of the most diverse populations and has been classified as one of the world's most livable cities. But Toronto's past and present are full of weird facts and tidbits from the truly trivial to the seriously strange: * The name ''Toronto'' first appeared on a French map as ''Lac de Taranteau,'' derived from the Iroquois word tkaronto. * Today, Yorkville is a trendy downtown shopping area but it was once a cemetery for those who could not afford a church burial; the cemetery was removed in the 1870s, but human remains keep turning up at every modern-day Yorkville construction project. * The land on which Toronto was built was purchased from the Mississauga First Nation band for a few hundred British pounds, 2000 gun flints, two dozen each of kettles and hats, all the hand mirrors they could carry and 100 gallons of excellent navy rum. * Olympic sculler Ned Hanlan got in lots of midnight practice rowing crates of whisky for his bootlegger dad. * William Davies, whose pork-processing company earned Toronto the nickname ''Hogtown,'' died after being butted by a goat. * The abandoned Queen Street underground streetcar station is a location for the latest remake of the slasher movie Nightmare on Elm Street. * And many more fascinating facts.
