Autor v nich zpodobuje člověka, jenž se jako individium střetávás okolním světem i se sebou samým, se svými pochybnostmi, pocitem viny a očekávání odplaty.
Západoněmecký spisovatel vypráví v románě o německém vědci, který se už v třicátých letech uchýlil s rodinou na italský venkov, aby nemusel sloužit nacismu, a v době druhé světové války se snaží uniknout nacistické mašinérii tím,že neuposlechne povolávacího rozkazu a skrývá se. Nervové vypětí, nemožnost vysvětlit vše nechápajícím dětem, nemoc dítěte bez lékařského ošetření, to jsou některé situace dramatického příběhu.
