Today the Confederation of Cinque Ports serves a largely ceremonial role. But the ancient ties which bind these towns together tell a fascinating story, rich in anecdote and intrigue, set in a popular tourist area, which includes dramatic chalk cliffs and expanses of marshland.

100 Years of the Seaside

A visual record of the nation's love affair with its beaches: the unique phenomenon that is the British seaside. Contains around 300 photographs from PA Photos' huge archives, spanning the whole of the 20th Century. Hand-picked by PA Photos' own archivists, most of these images have lain unseen since they were used as news pictures when first taken. Each image has been scanned especially for this book, many from glass plates, ensuring the best possible quality of reproduction. Britain's love of its pleasure beaches gave rise to a peculiar holiday culture - the seaside. Here a usually reserved nation would let its hair down, roll up its trousers, put on a kiss-me-quick hat and laugh at bawdy entertainers. From Victorian sobriety and Edwardian elegance through working-class high spirits to the present day, this book celebrates the place that the seaside holds in all our hearts.
Loch Lomond and The Trossachs National Park covers 720 square miles and is made up of four distinctive Loch Lomond and its surrounding peaks, Argyll Forest, The Trossachs, and historic Breadalbane. It touches the shores of no fewer than 18 lochs, contains Scotland's only lake, and has 27 mountains exceeding 3000 feet. Lying barely half an hour from Glasgow by car, the very fact that we can speak of a 'wilderness' area is a testament to the many years of effort which have gone into preserving this staggeringly beautiful landscape, even before it was designated as Scotland's first National Park. It could be argued, indeed, that this breath-taking scenery is not wilderness. It is paradise. Internationally-renowned photographer Andy Stansfield captures the sheer variety of the Park, in all its many moods from light-hearted to sombre, in this stunning collection of 140 full-colour images.
In over 140 photographs this book captures not just images of the historic locomotives and classic rolling stock of this narrow gauge railway but also the setting, background and the people, largely volunteer enthusiasts who gladly share their knowledge and experience.
