Bývalý nacistický dôstojník Maximilian Aue sa po druhej svetovej vojne stáva príslušníkom strednej triedy a riaditeľom továrne vo Francúzsku. Intelektuál so záujmom o filozofiu, literatúru a klasickú hudbu je však chladnokrvný vrah a dokonalý byrokrat. V neposlednom rade sa dostávame aj na klaustrofobické miesta plynových komôr v koncentračných táboroch, ktoré Nemci vytvorili na účely masového vyvražďovania, aké nemá v dejinách sveta obdobu.Láskavé bohyne, historická fikcia založená na skutočných udalostiach, sú náročný a sugestívny román, ktorý nastavuje zrkadlo ľudstvu a stavia pred čitateľa mnoho nepríjemných otázok a morálnych dilem. Autor vychádza z Aischylovej tragédie, pričom celý román je presiaknutý symbolickým odkazom konfliktu medzi dobrom a zlom. Kniha už krátko po svojom vydaní vyvolala nesmierny čitateľský rozruch a mnohí recenzenti, ale aj akademici označujú Littellov monumentálny epos za jeden z najvýznamnejších literárnych počinov vôbec. Publikáciu z verejných zdrojov podporil Fond na podporu umenia.
