Zwischen 1838 und 1844 unternimmt der finnische Ethnograf und Sprachwissenschaftler Matthias Alexander Castrén eine Reihe von Forschungsreisen. Sie führen ihn nach Lappland, Karelien und ins nördliche Russland bis nach Sibirien. Die beschwerliche Reise, unter Verzicht auf den Komfort der Zivilisation, konfrontiert den Forscher auch mit Gegebenheiten, die ihm bis dahin allenfalls aus der Literatur geläufig sind: Er wird überwältigt von der großartigen, wüsten, nicht vom Menschen beherrschten Natur und lässt sich von der unmittelbaren Begegnung mit den ursprünglichen Bewohnern dieser Landschaften und ihren Lebensweisen beeindrucken. Castrén beobachtet genau, wie sie mit Rentierzucht, Fischfang, Jagd und spärlichem Handel für ihren kargen Lebensunterhalt sorgen, macht Aufzeichnungen über ihre Sprachen und Sitten, hört von ihren Sagen und Traditionen, interessiert sich für ihre religiösen Bräuche und beobachtet kritisch die existenzbedrohenden Auswirkungen der Kolonisation auf Sámen, Karelier, Samojeden (Nenzen) wie Ostjaken (Chanten).
