Veľkolepý román svetoznámej talianskej prozaičky Elsy Morante patrí medzi najvýznamnejšie diela európskej prózy 20. storočia. Vojna, častá téma tejto doby, je v románe stvárnená netradične. Autorkin pohľad na moderné dejiny je rezignovaný, pričom história sa zdá byť bezútešná a fatálne nenapraviteľná. Morante vyjadruje, že „vo veľkom svete niet veľa noviniek“ a že história sa riadi nemenným princípom: jedni vládnu, druhí slúžia.
