V románe Dáma s kaméliami ide o rehabilitáciu kurtizány ako človeka, v čom Dumas ml. nadväzoval na domáce literárne tradície. V tomto príbehu, spočívajúcom na skutočnej udalosti, robí autor neuveriteľne vážny pokus s človekom. Ako keby skúmal prvok ľudského šťastia, akoby hľadal jeho ,,chemické zloženie", pokiaľ k nemu prispieva a pokiaľ ho vytvára zmyslová i duševná jednota dvoch pohlaví v ľúbosti. Dumas ml. vnikol do tohto vzťahu a ukázal isté rušivé zložky, ktoré bránia vyklenúť sa ľúbosti tak, ako sa ona dokonalá zrodí pri stretnutí dvoch ľudí, keď ,,ich bytosti tvoria už iba jednu".
