V románe Dáma s kaméliami ide o rehabilitáciu kurtizány ako človeka, v čom Dumas ml. nadväzoval na domáce literárne tradície. V tomto príbehu, spočívajúcom na skutočnej udalosti, robí autor neuveriteľne vážny pokus s človekom.
