Heimito von Doderer, jeden z najvýznamnejších rakúskych spisovateľov, sa takmer výhradne venoval životu a atmosfére Viedne. Po návrate z ruského zajatia, kde strávil niekoľko rokov, sa pustil do štúdia histórie. Jeho literárne dielo, charakteristické prepracovaným jazykom a hlbokým vhľadom do ľudskej psychiky, skúma zložité vzťahy medzi jednotlivcami a spoločnosťou. Tvorba von Doderera vyniká svojou epickou šírkou a schopnosťou zachytiť ducha doby.
Spoločenský román rakúskeho spisovateľa. Strudlhofské schody stoja v zastrčenej viedenskej uličke a spájajú dve úrovne mestskej štvrte a v tomto románe aj osudy postáv. Autor ich privádza k schodom v rôznych situáciách, raz je to stroskotaný ľúbostný vzťah, inokedy dôverný rozhovor...
Rozsáhlý román, představující první část nedokončené tetralogie (druhá část Hraniční les zůstala torzem a byla uveřejněna až po autorově smrti), ve kterém osudy podnikatele a jeho syna vytvářejí základy mohutné fresky o mnohapostavách, líčící soumrak rakousko-uherské monarchie. Vyprávění je ironickým svědectvím o zániku jedné společenské epochy. Autor je považován za největšího rakouského epika čtyřicátých až šedesátých let tohoto století.
H. von Doderer (1896–1967) náleží mezi přední rakouské prozaiky 20. století vedle H. Brocha a R. Musila. Svými romány usiloval o ideál „totálního románu“, v němž by neohraničený prostor pro množství nejrůznějších prvků vytvářel novou realitu, obdobnou životní skutečnosti. V „Merovejcích“ předvádí bizarní úsilí svobodného pána Childerika III. von Bartenbruch o vybudování „totální rodiny“, jež má být prostřednictvím sňatkových i jiných machinací soustředěna v jeho osobě. He began work on it in 1931, after reading Dostoyevsky's The Devils. Symphonic in construction, it is a panoramic re-creation of Viennese society in all its strata, conjuring the depths as well as the heights of everything we might think of as Vienna. Doderer has Balzacian scope as well as owing much to Proust and Musil. His human comedy is drawn with a humour as vital when ironic as when satirical, and his baroque imagination is well served by his tireless linguistic ingenuity.
Widowed and newly retired, the turn-of-the-century Austrian civil servant Julius Zihal has left the safe haven of the Tax Office and its orderly, codified administrative practices and now faces a drab and uncertain future alone. This gloomy scene suddenly becomes brighter when he discovers that the lighted windows of the adjacent apartment buildings offer a nightly display of variously-endowed ladies undressing as they prepare for bed. The expected Jekyll and Hyde contrast between Julius' Biedermeier daytime conduct and his nocturnal activities never quite materialises as the bureaucrat within him dominates the voyeur and he attempts to open a file on Eros, as it were, by carefully noting down and categorising all the pertinent details of his observations, rather than simply surrendering to their pleasures.
