Nevins ha raccolto quattordici racconti editi su riviste pulp ("Detective Fiction Weekly", "Pocket Detective", "Argosy", "Dime Detective", "Black Mask", "Baffling Detective Stories"). I primi tredici furono pubblicati tra il 1936 e il 1943. Il quattordicesimo, "New York Blues", che dà il titolo a questo volume, ha una storia diversa.
