Předmětem fundované a čtivé Flemingovy práce je čtveřice vlivných knih, které formovaly studenou válku: Tma o polednách (1940) maďarského novináře a intelektuála Arthura Koestlera, Ze tmy (1941) německého námořníka a dělnického aktivisty Jana Valtina, Zvolil jsem svobodu (1946) sovětského inženýra Viktora Kravčenka a Svědek (1952) amerického žurnalisty Whittakera Chamberse. Všichni autoři byli pravověrnými komunisty, které trpká deziluze přivedla k odklonu od jejich ideologie; všichni o tomto zvratu napsali emotivní svědectví. Příběhy všech těchto čtyř knih a jejich autorů zasazuje John V. Fleming do širokého historického kontextu třicátých až padesátých let 20. století a rozebírá je ve všemožných souvislostech od politologických, literárněkritických až po psychologické. Především ukazuje na téměř fatální iluze levicové a částečně i liberální západoevropské veřejnosti ve vztahu ke stalinismu, komunismu a Sovětskému svazu zejména po druhé světové válce i obdobnou situaci americké veřejnosti hlavně během války. Při demaskování vražedné a nelidské povahy sovětského systému sehrály – jak Fleming přesvědčivě ukazuje – čtyři analyzované knihy, „antikomunistické manifesty“, velice důležitou roli a napomohly k porážce stalinistických sympatizantů a k reorientaci západní veřejnosti a politických reprezentací směrem k obraně demokratických a liberálních hodnot.
