Gustav Klimt

    • Gustave Klimt (1862-1918) was one of the most brilliant artists of the Austrian avant-garde. Admired for his sensual images of women and for his powerful and original vision, he produced some of the most haunting and evocative images of all time, including The Kiss , Love and The Three Ages of Woman , all of which are included in this perfect introduction to the artist’s work.Klimt started out as a decorator, opening a studio with his brother Ernst. Some of his most famous commissions were for murals, including the magnificent Beethoven Frieze, painted for the exhibition of Max Klinger’s statue of Beethoven, and the monumental ceiling paintings for the auditorium of Vienna University, which shocked a conservative public. A founder of Vienna Secession, the band of artists who resigned from the established art bodies to form their own group, Klimt became the principal painter of the Art Nouveau movement, painting glittering portraits of fashionable Viennese society as well as

    • Gustav Klimt (1862–1918) the famous Austrian Jugendstil artist made a lasting impact on the period of Vienna 1900 which continues to fascinate and resonate today. Klimt has made his mark especially on fin-de-siècle Vienna together with his fellow artists, among them Josef Hoffmann, Kolo Moser, Otto Wagner and Joseph Maria Olbrich. Away from the metropolis Vienna, Klimt derived important inspiration from the landscape surrounding the Attersee during his summer holidays between 1900 and 1916, creating more than 40 of his almost 50 known landscapes here. Comparable to Paul Cézanne’s Aix en Provence, Claude Monet’s Giverny and Egon Schiele’s Krumau, the Attersee was a place of unique artistic activity for the artist. The publication series Edition Klimt published by the Klimt Foundation sheds light on select artistic and personal milestones in the life and oeuvre of the Austrian Jugendstil artist. The second volume of this series is dedicated to the artist’s preferred holiday destination Attersee, offering insights into Klimt’s discovery of the Attersee as a refuge for the obligatory Sommerfrische and illustrating the artist’s ambivalent longing to be there by means of numerous paintings, unique documents, photographs and correspondence.

    • "Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) remains one of the most popular artists of the early 20th century. Published to accompany a major exhibition at Tate Liverpool, a highlight of that city's 2008 Capital of Culture celebrations and the first such show in the UK, Gustav Klimt explores the life and work of an intriguing figure at the heart of the cultural transformation of Vienna around 1900." "Central to the book is the first thorough examination of the relationship between Klimt's paintings and the work of his close friend the architect and designer Josef Hoffmann. Reaching beyond the two-dimensional arts, it hails the advent of an all-inclusive design culture that embraced interiors, furniture, clothing and jewellery. Essays by leading scholars and curators consider key works, events and developments: the founding of the Viennese Secession, the inaugural display of the Beethoven Frieze, and a series of collaborative ventures in the creation of total domestic environments for the pursuit of 'modern life', among them the Villa Waerndorfer in Vienna and the Villa Primavesi in rural northern Moravia. In addition, Klimt is assessed as both an accomplished erotic draughtsman and a seductive landscape painter."--Jacket
