Edward Everett patril medzi najvýznamnejších amerických rečníkov obdobia pred občianskou vojnou aj počas nej. Dodnes je spomínaný ako hlavný rečník na slávnostnom ceremoniáli pri príležitosti odhalenia Národného cintorína v Gettysburgu v roku 1863, kde predniesol viac ako dvojhodinový prejav – tesne pred tým, ako prezident Abraham Lincoln predniesol svoj slávny, dvojosminútový Gettysburgský prejav. Everettova rétorika a jeho schopnosť osloviť publikum boli v jeho dobe pozoruhodné a odrážali intelektuálne a politické prúdy vtedajšej Ameriky. Jeho práca sa dotýkala širokej škály tém a jeho vplyv na verejnú mienku bol značný.
