Goethe's most complex and profound work, Faust was the effort of the great poet's entire lifetime. Written over a period of sixty years, it can be read as a document of Goethe's moral and artistic development. As a drama drawn from an immense variety of cultural and historical material, set in a wealth of poetic and theatrical traditions, it can be read as the story of Western humanity striving restlessly and ruthlessly for progress. Faust is made available to the English reader in a completely new translation that communicates both its poetic variety and its many levels of tone. The language is present-day English, and Goethe's formal and rhythmic variety is reproduced in all its richness. With stylistic ease the translation conveys both the sense and the tonal range of the German original without recourse to archaisms or to interpretive elaborations. A short essay affords the reader an understanding of Goethe's considerations as he composed the drama in the course of six decades, and the notes elucidate allusions that may be obscure to an English reader and indicate the significance of metrical features of the text. This book is part of a projected twelve-volume paperback series that brings into modern English a reliable translation of a representative portion of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's vast body of work. Selected from over 140 volumes in German, this edition is the new standard in English and contains poetry, drama, fiction, memoir, criticism, and scientific writing. Náš čitateľ dostáva v novom slovenskom preklade slávne dielo: Goetheho Fausta - predbežne prvý diel. Goetheho Faust - to je veľkolepá a otrasná ľudská dráma na ceste za poznaním a za šťastím. Hlavnú postavu Goethe prevzal z nemeckých povestí a ľudových hier, kde žila už od začiatku 16.storočia, no naplnil ju realistickým obsahom a myšlienkami a rozpormi moderného človeka. Faust v Goetheho diele je učenec, ktorý po mnohých rokoch štúdia filozofie, teológie a prírodných vied príde k poznaniu, že sa nemôže dopátrať podstaty sveta a prírody. Preto je nešťastný. V zúfalstve upíše svoju dušu diablovi, ktorý mu sľúbi, že mu dá poznať opravdivé šťastie, že mu dá prežiť okamih taký krásny, až si zaželá, aby zastal a trval. Toto veľdielo, ktoré inšpirovalo mnohých hudobných, divadelných i výtvarných umelcov, si iste nájde cestu i k nášmu čitateľovi svojou krásou i hĺbkou a všeľudskou i všedobovou problematikou.

Adolf Muschg wurde 1934 als Sohn von Adolf Muschg senior (1872–1946) und seiner zweiten Frau in Zollikon, Kanton Zürich/Schweiz geboren. Er studierte Germanistik, Anglistik sowie Philosophie in Zürich und Cambridge und promovierte über Ernst Barlach. Von 1959 bis 1962 unterrichtete er als Gymnasiallehrer in Zürich, dann folgten verschiedene Stellen als Hochschullehrer, unter anderem in Deutschland (Universität Göttingen), Japan und den USA. 1970 bis 1999 war er Professor für deutsche Sprache und Literatur an der Eidgenössischen Technischen Hochschule Zürich. 1975 war Muschg Kandidat der Zürcher Sozialdemokratischen Partei für den Ständerat. Er wurde zwar nicht gewählt, äußerte sich nach wie vor regelmäßig zu politischen Zeitfragen. Adolf Muschg ist seit 1976 Präsident der Akademie der Künste Berlin, Mitglied der Deutschen Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung Darmstadt sowie der Akademie der Wissenschaften und der Literatur Mainz. Lesereisen führten ihn bisher nach Deutschland, England, Holland, Italien, Japan, Kanada, Österreich, Portugal, Taiwan, USA. Er lebt in Männedorf bei Zürich.
