Irský dramatik, básník a spisovatel Oscar Wilde ve své osobě spojoval ideál svobodného umělce bořícího společenské konvence, autora úchvatných podobenství a vtipného glosátora, s člověkem, který nesmírně touží po vlastní popularitě a je schopen aktivně propagovat své dílo. Podle dobových svědectví byl skvělým vypravěčem, schopným řadu hodin bavit společnost. Námi vydávaná kniha vyšla poprvé v roce 1891 jako Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime and other Stories. Tři z textů sbírky vyšly již dříve časopisecky (nejstarší z nich, Strašidlo Cantervillské, již v roce 1887), titulní povídka byla naopak dopsána až pro knižní vydání.
