Marcus Terentius Varro (116-27 př. Kr.) byl klíčovou postavou římské kultury, přičemž z jeho díla se dochovalo jen málo – tři knihy Res rusticae a šest knih z De lingua Latina. Sv. Jeroným sestavil seznam 36 Varronových děl o 486 knihách, přičemž uznal, že je neúplný. Dnes se předpokládá, že Varro napsal přes 600 knih. Jeho práce pokrývají téměř všechny oblasti lidské činnosti. Z hlediska klasické filologie jsou významné jeho plautovské studie, v nichž analyzoval komedie připisované Plautovi a uznal jedenadvacet z nich jako autentické. Tyto komedie se dochovaly až do dnešních dnů, což dokládá jeho autoritu. Varronova encyklopedie Disciplinae, obsahující devět knih o gramatice, dialektice, rétorice, geometrie, aritmetice, astrologii, hudbě, medicíně a architektuře, měla zásadní vliv na středověký vzdělávací systém “sedmi svobodných umění”. Největší část jeho díla se však věnovala antikvářství. Varro se snažil literárně zachovat tradice, které společenský vývoj zapomínal, a jeho zájem o etymologii slov byl klíčovým prvkem jeho výkladu, což se stalo charakteristickým rysem jeho odkazu.
