Never very good at academic work, ninth-grader Trevor has learned to navigate the classroom and homework with a series of evasion strategies and the help of friends. On the brink of tenth grade and the rest of his life, in which education is supposed to play a major part, the future looks less than rosy and school for the most part has become a demoralizing endurance test until he is seized suddenly by a strange supernatural intelligence. He begins experiencing random flashes of brilliance over which he has no control. To his dismay, they attract the unwelcome attention of teachers, students, popular brainiac and long-time tormentor Blaine, and, most terrifying, Blaine's ex-girlfriend Brie. Trevor and his friends set out to harness his unruly mental power and discover its source, as Trevor is drawn into an investigation of school break-ins and Brie's family secret, and is forced to confront an enraged and suspicious Blaine. Then Trevor must decide to what end he will use the power. Fast-paced and humorous, this adventure/fantasy explores the self-defining choices of adolescence. It will appeal to younger, middle, and young adult readers.
