Cesty do literatury bývají někdy trnité, ale u Michela Fabera tomu tak nebylo. Stačilo mu psát si dvacet let do šuplíku, učit se řemeslo a nakonec se nechat svou ženou přesvědčit, že už by nemusel psát jen pro sebe. Povídkou Někdy prostě prší na první pokus vyhrál soutěž Iana St Jamese a téhož roku triumfoval povídkou Ryby v Macallanově ceně. Nadějného autora si záhy povšimlo edinburské nakladatelství Canongate a roku 1999 mu vydalo stejnojmennou sbírku povídek Někdy prostě prší, za niž obdržel Cenu ondřejského kříže za nejlepší prvotinu. Ve své první povídkové sbírce prokázal Michel Faber výjimečně živou fantazii, lásku k jazyku i podivuhodnou všestrannost. Jeho povídky jsou hravé a zároveň hluboce dojemné, satirické, a přitom upřímně lidské. Setkáme se v nich s Bohem, který najde Zemi na skládce, s láskou v sexshopu i s rybami, které plují ve vzduchu a číhají v uličkách. Michel Faber bývá přirovnáván k Ianu McEwanovi či Roaldu Dahlovi, ale už touto první sbírkou dokázal, že je to spisovatel naprosto originální.

Posmelený úspechom svojej prvotiny autor vydáva svoj prvý román "Pod kožou (Under the Skin (2000)" inšpirovaý škótskymi vysočinami. Ako väčšina Faberovej práce sa aj tento román zaraďuje veľmi ťažko medzi existujúce štýly. Je to kombinácia Sci-Fi, hororu a thrilleru okorenená dostatočnou hĺbkou a citom, vďaka čomu autor dostáva zo strany literárnych kritikov takmer jednohlasnú pochvalu.

Michel Faber je bytostný prozaik, básním se věnoval jen okrajově a sám vtipkoval, že tímhle tempem bude mít dost materiálu na první sbírku někdy ve svých devadesáti letech. Pak ale po dvaceti letech manželství Faberova žena Eva onemocněla nevyléčitelnou rakovinou kostní dřeně (mnohočetným myelomem, abychom byli přesní) a Faber se vrátil ke své původní profesi, totiž ošetřovatelství. A právě v pokoji londýnské nemocnice, kde Eva strávila poslední měsíce svého života, vznikly první básně z předkládaného cyklu (je jich nakonec něco přes 70, na cca 140 tiskových stranách.) Tematicky se básně omezují na průběh nemoci, Evinu smrt a Faberův žal. Je to poezie nekompromisně upřímná, emocionálně intenzivní, místy protkaná šibeničním humorem. Drtivá většina básní je psaná volným veršem a rýmovaná sporadicky, což je paradoxně její výhoda: je mnohem přístupnější, než poezie obvykle bývá, a účinek je bezprostřednější. V těchto básních, jež ocenily i takové těžké literární váhy jako Ian McEwan, přišel Michel Faber na něco obecně sdělného: co to znamená najít životní lásku a pak ji takhle krutým způsobem ztratit. Dal hlas lidem, kteří o rakovině kvůli přetrvávajícímu tabu neumí mluvit, nemocným, kteří si své pocity nechávají pro sebe.
