Alexander Sutherland Neill, geboren 1883 in Schottland, beendete seine Studienzeit als Master of Art und Master of Education. Doch seine anschließende Praxis als Lehrer an staatlichen Schulen verlor für ihn sehr schnell ihren Reiz. A. S. Neill sah immer klarer, dass solche Erziehung zu schweren seelischen und charakterlichen Dauerschäden führt. Wachsen in Selbstbestimmung – das war das Prinzip seiner später weltberühmten Internatsschule Summerhill, die er 1921 gründete und bis zu seinem Tod 1973 leitete.
