Ein Schotte erforscht Äthiopien auf der Suche nach den Quellen des Nils. Mit James Bruce, einem schottischen Landedelmann, beginnt die wissenschaftliche Erkundung Afrikas durch Europäer. Sein Weg führte ihn vom Roten Meer nach Äthiopien, wo er am 4. November 1770 die Quellen des Blauen Nils erreichte, ein Ziel, das seit Jahrhunderten im Verborgenen lag. Bruce, 1730 als Sohn eines schottischen Gutsherrn geboren, studierte Rechtswissenschaften in Edinburgh und wurde nach dem Tod seiner Frau von der Ferne fasziniert. Er reiste nach Spanien, studierte Arabisch und äthiopische Sprachen und stieß auf die ungelöste Frage nach den Nilsquellen. 1763 war er Konsul in Algier, 1765 lebte er in Aleppo und reiste dann durch das ägyptische Niltal nach Gondar. Zu dieser Zeit war Äthiopien von politischer Verwirrung geprägt. Bruce erlebte Hofintrigen, nahm an Feldzügen teil und wurde Kommandeur der königlichen Kavallerie. Seine Erlebnisse schildert er in einem literarisch interessanten Reisebericht. 1773 kehrte er über Kairo nach Schottland zurück und berichtete von seiner Wanderung zu den Nilsquellen, wo er seine Begeisterung ausdrückte. Unbekannt war ihm, dass bereits 1618 ein Europäer, der Jesuitenpater Pedro Paez, dort gewesen war. Der Herausgeber, Herbert Gussenbauer, ist promovierter Ethnologe und Afrikanist, der in Wien lebt und sich ethnohistorischen Themen widmet.
